  • The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) experiment is a joint venture of the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA to detect and observe in detail gravitational waves from astronomical sources. In 2008 ESA reported LISA was in the mission formulation stage with the earliest possible launch taking place between 2018 and 2020. LISA still faces funding competition from two other missions, the Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) and the International X-ray Observatory (IXO).

  • The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a planned infrared space observatory, the partial successor to the aging Hubble Space Telescope. The JWST will not be a complete successor, because it will not be sensitive to all of the light wavelengths that Hubble can see. The main scientific goal is to observe the most distant objects in the universe, those beyond the reach of either ground based instruments or the Hubble.

  • The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), known as Curiosity, is a NASA rover scheduled to be launched in October 2011 and would perform the first-ever precision landing on Mars. It is a rover that will assess whether Mars ever was, or is still today, an environment able to support microbial life. In other words, its mission is to determine the planet's habitability. It will also analyze samples scooped up from the soil and drilled powders from rocks.

The mission is still in the planning stages so changes to the current description are likely over the next few years. Due to budgetary constraints and technological difficulties, the lander portion of the mission, the Mercury Surface Element (MSE) was cancelled.

One of the main goals of the mission is the hunt for Earth-sized planets orbiting stars other than the Sun. The project is being managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.
