The state was formed in 1996 from part of Rivers State and thus, it is one of the newest states of the Nigerian federation.

  • Norihiko Akagi (赤城 徳彦, born April 18, 1959) is a Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party, a member of the House of Representatives in the Diet (national legislature). A native of Makabe District, Ibaraki and graduate of the University of Tokyo, he worked at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries from 1983 to 1988.
