  Thomas Henry Huxley PC FRS (4 May 1825 – 29 June 1895) was an English biologist, known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley's famous 1860 debate with Samuel Wilberforce was a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution, and in his own career. Huxley had been planning to leave Oxford on the previous day, but, after an encounter with Robert Chambers, the author of "Vestiges", he changed his mind and decided to join the debate.

  William Topaz McGonagall (March 1825 – 29 September 1902) was a Scottish weaver, actor, amateur poet, and performance artist. His performance art centered on his own belief that his verse showed a high degree of verbal skill and talent. At the age of 16 he went to Canada and was six years in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company.   Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (October 11, 1825 – November 28, 1898) was a poet and, as he was born in Zürich, Switzerland, a fellow-townsman of Gottfried Keller. Meyer is a master of the novella, but in all other respects there is a most striking difference.
