    • Notes: Sometimes the '40s is used as shorthand for the 1940s, the 1840s, or other such decades in various centuries – see List of decades. In American vernacular, '40s' may also refer to forty ounce bottles of malt liquor. The 40s decade ran from January 1, 40, to December 31, 49. It was the fifth decade in the Anno Domini/Common Era, if the nine-year period from 1 AD to 9 AD is considered as a decade.
