The story of Manchester United began in 1878 when employees of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company's Carriage and Wagon Works requested permission and sponsorship from their employers to start a football team. Permission was given, and Newton Heath L&YR (which stood for "Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway") was born, playing at a pitch on North Road in Newton Heath. More information...

    The Heysel Stadium Disaster occurred when a wall collapsed in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, before the start of the 1985 European Cup Final. 39 people died, and 600 were injured. Approximately one hour before the Liverpool-Juventus final was due to kick off, a large group of Liverpool fans were suddenly thought to have breached a fence separating them from rival Juventus fans. The Juventus fans ran back and away from the perceived threat into a concrete retaining wall.

    The Hillsborough Disaster was a human crush that occurred on 15 April 1989 at Hillsborough, a football stadium, the home of Sheffield Wednesday F.C. in Sheffield, England, resulting in the deaths of 96 people, all fans of Liverpool F.C. It remains the deadliest stadium-related disaster in British history and one of the worst in international football accidents that has ever occurred.

    The Munich air disaster took place on 6 February 1958, when British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport in Munich, West Germany. On board the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the "Busby Babes", along with a number of supporters and journalists. 20 of the 44 people on board the aircraft died in the crash.

It was the tenth European Football Championship, which is held every four years and endorsed by UEFA, and the first to use the "Euro" name.     The Bradford City Fire Disaster occurred on Saturday 11 May 1985 when a flash fire consumed one side of the Valley Parade football stadium in Bradford, England.     The Battle of Bramall Lane is the informal name given to an English First Division football match between Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion at United's Bramall Lane ground on 16 March 2002. The match was unusual in that it was abandoned due to Sheffield United having only six players left on the pitch.
