It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. The county covers an area of 779.9 square kilometres (301.1 sq mi). Its administrative seat is the town of Polkowice, and it also contains the towns of Chocianów and Przemków.
    • Sprachraum is a linguistic term used to designate a geographical area where a language, dialect, group or family of languages is spoken. The German word Sprachraum literally means "language space". Most Sprachräume do not follow national borders. For example, half of South America is part of the Spanish Sprachraum, while a single, small country like Switzerland is at the intersection of four such language spheres. A Sprachraum can also be separated by oceans.
