Summary

The Pohjanmaa class minelayer is a minelayer in use by the Finnish Navy. There is currently only one Pohjanmaa class vessel in service in the Finnish Navy. She is the flagship of the navy. The ship has an ice operating classification of ICE-1A so she can operate all year round. During a crisis the main task for Pohjanmaa is mine laying and acting as a command ship. She also acts as a school ship for the Naval Academy cadets. Part of their training includes an annual cruise abroad. More information...

  • The Bathurst class corvettes were a class of minesweepers produced in Australia during World War II. 60 Bathurst class corvettes in total were commissioned; 36 for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), 20 for the British Admiralty (although ordered by the UK they were crewed by Australians and commissioned into the RAN), and 4 for the Indian Navy. All 60 ships were designed and constructed in Australia.

  • The Admirable class was the largest and one of the most successful classes of minesweepers the United States Navy ordered during World War II. Typically, the minesweeper detected and removed mines before the rest of the fleet arrived, thereby ensuring safe passage for the larger ships. They were also charged with antisubmarine warfare (ASW) duties with rear-mounted depth charge racks and a forward-firing Hedgehog. Their job was essential to the safety and success of U.S.

  • The Isles class trawlers were a class of naval trawler used by the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy during World War II. The type comprised 197 vessels built between 1939 and 1945 in the nearly identical Isles, Dance, Tree and Shakespearian classes. Generally similar to the Castle class naval trawlers of 1916-18, though somewhat larger, they were mainly used on minesweeping and harbour defence duties.
  • The Alta class minesweeper is a ship class of minesweepers operated by the Royal Norwegian Navy. An almost identical class of minehunters is known as the Oksøy class. The Alta class was built by Kvaerner Mandal during 1996 and 1997, while the related Oksøy class was built in 1994 and 1995. A total of 9 vessels were built, 5 minesweepers and 4 minehunters. HNoMS Orkla was completely destroyed in a fire, and HNoMS Oksøy was damaged when it ran aground in 2005.

  • The Algerine-class was a class of minesweepers of the Royal Navy and the Commonwealth. 110 ships of the class were launched between 1942 and 1944 and served in World War II. They were designed as small vessels that could serve in several roles, not just as minesweepers; in practice the desperate shortage of convoy escorts in the Second Battle of the Atlantic meant that they served mainly in that role; twelve Algerines of the Royal Canadian Navy consequently never had minesweeping gear fitted.

  • The Aggressive class minesweepers are a class of US-built minesweepers. They are designated as MSO (Mine Sweeper Ocean), distinguishing them from the smaller coastal MSCs and inshore MSIs.

  • The Hunt class minesweeper was a class of minesweeping sloop built between 1916 and 1919 for the Royal Navy. They were built in two discrete groups, the earlier Belvoir group designed by the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company and the subsequent (and slightly larger) Aberdare group designed by the Admiralty. They were classed as Fleet Minesweeping Sloops, that is ships intended to clear open water. The Belvoir group were named after British fox hunts.

  • The Halcyon class was a class of 21 oil-fired minesweepers (officially, "fleet minesweeping sloops") built for the British Royal Navy between 1933 and 1939. They were given traditional small ship names used historically by the Royal Navy and served during World War II.

  • The Bangor-class minesweepers were a class of minesweepers operated by the Royal Navy (RN), Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Royal Indian Navy (RIN) during World War II. The class derives its name from the lead ship, HMS Bangor (J00), launched on 19 February 1940 and commissioned on 7 November 1940. Royal Navy ships were named after coastal towns of the United Kingdom Their small size gave them poor sea handling abilities, reportedly worse even than the Flower class corvettes.

In Australian English, the littoral thalassinidean Trypaea australiensis is referred to as the yabby (a term which also refers to freshwater crayfish of the genus Cherax), frequently used as bait for estuarine fishing; elsewhere, however, they are poorly known, and as such have few vernacular names, "mud lobster" and "ghost shrimp" counting among them.
