Summary

Johann Stumpf (1500–1578) was an early writer on the history and topography of Switzerland. He was born at Bruchsal, and was educated there and at Strasbourg and Heidelberg. In 1520 he became a cleric or chaplain in the order of the Knights Hospitaller. He was sent in 1521 to the preceptory of that order at Freiburg in Breisgau, ordained a priest at Basel, and in 1522 was placed in charge of the preceptory at Bubikon. More information...

  • Joachim Camerarius (April 12, 1500 – April 17, 1574), the Elder, German classical scholar, was born at Bamberg, Bavaria. His family name was Liebhard, but he was generally called Kammermeister, previous members of his family having held the office of chamberlain (camerarius) to the bishops of Bamberg. He studied at Leipzig, Erfurt and Wittenberg, where he became intimate with Melanchthon. For some years he was teacher of history and Greek at the gymnasium in Nuremberg.

  • Saint John of Avila, Apostle of Andalusia (6 January 1500, Almodóvar del Campo – 10 May 1569, Montilla, Spain) was a Spanish apostolic preacher, author, mystic and saint, canonized in 1970. Known in Spanish as San Juan de Ávila. Saint John of Avila was of Jewish converso descent. At the age of fourteen he was sent to the University of Salamanca to study law but returned after a year to his father's home, where he spent the next three years in the practice of austere piety.
