Overview

Summary

Mars has two tiny moons, Phobos and Deimos, which are thought to be captured asteroids. Both satellites were discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall, and are named after the characters Phobos (panic/fear) and Deimos (terror/dread) who, in Greek mythology, accompanied their father Ares, god of war, into battle. Ares was known as Mars to the Romans. More information...

  • Phobos is the larger and closer of the two moons of Mars, the other being Deimos. It is named after the Greek god Phobos (which means "fear"), a son of Ares (Mars). A small, irregularly shaped object, Phobos orbits about 9,377 km (5,827 mi) from the center of Mars, closer to its primary than any other known planetary moon.

  • Deimos, is the smaller and outer of Mars’ two moons (the other being Phobos). It is named after Deimos, a figure representing dread in Greek Mythology. Its systematic designation is Mars II.

  • The Phobos program was an unmanned space mission consisting of two probes launched by the Soviet Union to study Mars and its moons Phobos and Deimos. Phobos 2 became a Mars orbiter and returned 38 images with a resolution of up to 40 meters. Both probes suffered from critical failures. Phobos 1 and 2 were of a new spacecraft design, succeeding the type used in the Venera planetary missions of 1975-1985, last used during the Vega 1 and Vega 2 missions to comet Halley.

  • A transit of Deimos across the Sun as seen from Mars takes place when Deimos passes directly between the Sun and a point on the surface of Mars, obscuring a small part of the Sun's disc for an observer on Mars. During a transit, Deimos can be seen from Mars as a small black disc rapidly moving across the face of the Sun. The event could also be referred to as a partial occultation (or, popularly but inaccurately, a partial eclipse) of the Sun by Deimos.

During a transit, Phobos can be seen from Mars as a large black disc rapidly moving across the face of the Sun. At the same time, the shadow of Phobos moves across the Martian surface.

  • Stickney crater is the largest crater on Phobos, which is a satellite of Mars. It is located at 1°N 49°W / 1°N 49°W / 1; -49Coordinates: 1°N 49°W / 1°N 49°W / 1; -49 and is 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) in diameter, taking up a substantial proportion of the moon's surface. It is named after Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall, wife of Phobos's discoverer, Asaph Hall.

  • The Kaidun meteorite is a meteorite that fell on 3 December 1980 on a Soviet military base near what is now Al-Khuraybah in Yemen. A fireball was observed travelling from the Northwest to the Southeast, and a single stone weighing about 2 kilograms (4.4 lb) was recovered from a small impact pit. It contains a uniquely wide variety of minerals, causing some confusion as to its origin.

  • Phobos and Deimos, the two moons of Mars, are locations frequently mentioned in works of science fiction.

  • Swift crater is a crater on Mars's moon Deimos. It is about 3 km in diameter. Swift crater is named after Jonathan Swift, who predicted the existence of the moons of Mars. Swift crater is one of two named features on Deimos, the other being Voltaire crater. On 10 July 2006, Mars Global Surveyor took an image of Deimos from 22,985 kilometres (14,282 mi) away showing Swift crater.
