  Aden is a city in Yemen. It is a seaport, located by the eastern approach to the Red Sea, some 170 kilometres east of Bab-el-Mandeb. Aden's ancient, natural harbour lies in the crater of an extinct volcano which now forms a peninsula, joined to the mainland by a low isthmus. This harbour, Front Bay, was first used by the ancient Kingdom of Awsan between the 5th and 7th centuries BC. The modern harbour is on the other side of the peninsula.   HMVS Cerberus is a breastwork monitor, a type of turreted warship designed in the 1860s by Edward Reed. Launched in 1868 to defend the Australian colony of Victoria, Cerberus was named after the three-headed mythical dog which guarded the entrance to Hades.
