  • John XV, Pope from 985 to 996, succeeding Boniface VII (974, 984–985). It was said to have been Pope after another Pope John that reigned four months after Pope John XIV (983–984) and was named "Papa Ioannes XIV Bis" or "Pope John XIV Two". This John XIV Two never existed, because he was confused with a certain cardinal deacon John son of Robert that opposed to Boniface VII, and now is excluded from the papal lists. John XV was the son of Leo, a Roman presbyter.

  • Abu Mahmood Khujandi or Abu Mahmud Hamid ibn al-Khidr Al-Khujandi was a Persian astronomer and mathematician who lived in the late 10th century and helped build an observatory near the city of Ray in Iran. He was born in Khujand in about 940, and died in 1000. A bronze bust of the astronomer is present in a park in modern-day Khujand. The few facts about Khujandi's life that are known come from both his surviving writings and comments made by Nassereddin Tusi.
  • Abū Sahl Wayjan ibn Rustam al-Qūhī (sometimes al-Kūhī), was a Persian mathematician, physicist and astronomer. Quhi was from Kuh (or Quh), an area in Tabaristan, and flourished in Baghdad in the 10th century. He is considered one of the greatest Muslim geometers. Many mathematical and astronomical writings are ascribed to him. He was the leader of the astronomers working in 988 AD at the observatory built by the Buwayhid Sharaf al-Dawla.

  • Abu Sa'id Ubaid Allah ibn Bakhtyashu, (940–1058) also spelled Bukhtishu, Bukhtyashu, and Bakhtshooa in many texts, was an 11th century Persian physician, descendant of Bakhtshooa Gondishapoori. He spoke the Syriac language. He was the last representative of the Bukhtyashu family of Nestorian Christian physicians, who emigrated from Jundishapur to Baghdad in 765.

  • Baldwin III of Flanders The Young (940 – January 1, 962) was count of Flanders together with his father Arnulf I. He died before his father and was succeeded by his infant son Arnulf II, with his father acting as regent until his own death. Arnulf I had made Baldwin co-ruler in 958. During his short rule, Baldwin established the weaving and fulling industry in Ghent thus laying the basis for the economical importance of the county in the centuries to come.
  • Henry III (940–5 October 989), called the Younger, of the Luitpolding dynasty, son of Berthold, Duke of Bavaria, was the duke of Carinthia (976–978, 985–989) and Bavaria (983–985). On the death of Berthold in 947, Bavaria was given to the brother of King Otto I, Henry, who had married Judith, daughter of the old duke Arnulf the Bad. In 976, Henry received some compensation by receiving the ancient duchy of Carinthia, severed as it was from Bavaria.
  • Guy or Guido (940 – 25 June 965) was the margrave of Ivrea from 950 to his death. In 950, his father, King Berengar II of Italy, appointed him to rule in the familial margraviate. His mother was Willa of Tuscany, his elder brother was Adalbert II, co-king with their father, and their younger brother was Conrad. In 959, Guy sheltered the exiled doge of Venice, Pietro III Candiano.
  • Chavundraya (or Chamundaraya, 940–989) was a military commander, poet and a minister in the court of the Western Ganga Dynasty of Talakad (in present day Karnataka, India). A person of many talents, in 982 he commissioned the Gomateshwara, a monolithic sculpture in Shravanabelagola, an important place of pilgrimage for Jains.
