Summary

O Meridiano de Greenwich é o meridiano que passa sobre a localidade de Greenwich (no Observatório Real, nos arredores de Londres, Reino Unido) e que, por convenção, divide o globo terrestre em ocidente e oriente, permitindo medir a longitude. Foi estabelecido por Sir George Biddell Airy em 1851. Definido, por acordo internacional em 1884, como o primeiro meridiano, serve de referência para calcular distâncias em longitudes e estabelecer os fusos horários. More information...

  • German Samoa was a German protectorate from 1900 to 1914, consisting of the islands of Upolu, Savai'i, Apolima and Manono, now wholly within the independent state Samoa of today, formerly Western Samoa.   • The Hong Kong Jockey Club is one of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong, founded in 1884 to promote horse racing. It was granted Royal Charter and renamed to "The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club" (英皇御准香港賽馬會) in 1959. The name of the institution was reverted to its original name in 1996 due to the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997. It is a non-profit organisation providing horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment in Hong Kong.

  • Toynbee Hall is the original university settlement house of the settlement movement. Founded in 1884 on Commercial Street, Whitechapel in the East End of London, it remains active today. A centre for social reform, Toynbee Hall was founded by Samuel and Henrietta Barnett, and named in memory of their friend and fellow reformer, Oxford historian Arnold Toynbee, who had died the previous year.
  • The Union Association was a league in Major League Baseball which lasted for only one season in 1884. St. Louis won the pennant and joined the National League the following season. Chicago moved to Pittsburgh in late August, and four teams folded during the season and were replaced.
