Overview

Summary

More information...

  • Epinephrine, widely called adrenaline, is a hormone and neurotransmitter. When produced in the body it increases heart rate, contracts blood vessels and dilates air passages and participates in the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system. It is a catecholamine, a monoamine produced only by the adrenal glands from the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine.

  • Methyldopa (-α-Methyl-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine; Aldomet, Aldoril, Dopamet, Dopegyt, etc) is a psychoactive drug used as a sympatholytic or antihypertensive. Its use is now deprecated following introduction of alternative safer classes of agents. However, it continues to have a role in otherwise difficult to treat hypertension and gestational hypertension (also known as pregnancy-induced hypertension).
  • Isoprenaline or isoproterenol (USAN, trade names Medihaler-Iso and Isuprel) is a sympathomimetic beta adrenergic agonist medication. It is structurally similar to adrenaline but acts selectively on beta receptors, activating β1 and β2 receptors equally.

  • -DOPA (-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine; Dextrodopa) is similar to -DOPA (Levodopa), but with opposite chirality. Levo- and dextro- rotation reference a molecule's ability to rotate planes of polarized light in either direction. Whereas -DOPA is moderately effective in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), -DOPA is biologically inactive.

  • Noradrenaline (abbreviated NA or NAd) or norepinephrine (abbreviated norepi or NE) is a catecholamine with dual roles as a hormone and a neurotransmitter.
  • Dopexamine is a β2-adrenergic receptor agonist. It also acts at dopamine receptors. Use in sepsis has been proposed. It is considered a inotropic agent.
  • Arbutamine is a cardiac stimulant. It stimulates adrenergic receptors.
  • Adrenalone is an adrenergic agent used as a topical vasoconstrictor and hemostatic. It is the ketone form of epinephrine.
  • Hexoprenaline is a β2-adrenergic receptor agonist used in the treatment of asthma. Hexoprenaline is also used as a tocolytic agent i.e. It can suppress labor. Contraindications to its use as a tocolytic agent are cardiovascular disease, surgical shock, tachycardia, diabetes mellitis.
