  The geography of California is diverse. There are alpine mountains, foggy coastlines, hot deserts, and a fertile central valley. The U.S. state of California is home to some of the world's most exceptional trees: the tallest, most massive, and oldest. It is also home to both the highest and lowest points in the 48 contiguous states. •  Mavericks (location)

  Maverick's or Mavericks is a world-famous surfing location in Northern California. It is located approximately one-half mile (0.8 km) from shore in Pillar Point Harbor just north of Half Moon Bay at the village of Princeton-By-The-Sea. After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 feet (8m) and top out at over 50 feet (15m). The break is caused by an unusually-shaped underwater rock formation.

•  Zzyzx, California

  Zzyzx, California is a settlement in San Bernardino County, California, formerly the site of the Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Spa and now the site of the Desert Studies Center. The area is also the location of Lake Tuendae, one of the refuge habitats of the endangered Mohave tui chub. Zzyzx Road is a 4.5-mile (7.2 km) long, part paved and part dirt, rural collector road in the Mojave Desert. It runs from Interstate 15 generally south to the Zzyzx settlement.

•  Portuguese Bend

  The Portuguese Bend region is the largest area of natural vegetation remaining on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Though once slated for development (and in fact the projected route of Crenshaw Boulevard through the area still shows on many maps), the area is geologically unstable and is unsuitable for building. The geographical location and geological history of the peninsula make the remaining habitat extremely valuable for ecological and other scientific reasons.

•  Yolo Bypass

  The Yolo Bypass is one of two flood bypasses in the Sacramento Valley located in Yolo and Solano Counties. It protects Sacramento and other river city communities from flooding through a system of weirs. These weirs connect the bypass to the Sacramento River as well as to various local creeks where the water is eventually drained into the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Sacramento experienced several severe floods prior to construction of the bypass.

•  Fish Slough Area of Critical Environmental Concern

  The Slough Area of Critical Environmental Concern is located near Bishop, California on the western side of the Chalfant Valley. Its 36,000 acres (146 km²) were designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in 1982. The ACEC is an oasis in the middle of the otherwise arid Volcanic Tableland. One plant, Fish Slough milk vetch, cannot be found anywhere else in the world outside of the Fish Slough ACEC. The alkali Mariposa lily is also a rare plant found in the ACEC.

•  Cinder Cone National Natural Landmark

  The Cinder Cone National Natural Landmark is located in the Mojave National Preserve in southeastern California in the United States. The landmark is located mostly south of Interstate 15 and the small community of Halloran Springs. The cinder cones were formed when lava erupted. Most of the cinder cones and lava flows lie between Kelbaker Road on the west and Cima Road to the east.

•  Devils Playground

  The Devils Playground is a large sandy region in the Mojave Desert in the state of California in the United States. Dunes and salt flats stretch for approximately 40 miles in a generally northwest-southeasterly direction in the Mojave National Preserve. The Cronese Mountains are located at its northwestern edge. The "playground" lies between the town of Baker and the Providence Mountains.

  The Jawbone-Butterbredt Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC), is located northwest of California City at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada in California. Motor vehicle use within the ACEC is restricted to specific trails and roads. The area includes the Jawbone OHV Open Area and lies just south of the Scodie Mountains.

  Nerikes Allehanda (shortened NA) is a daily newspaper based in Örebro, Sweden, and distributed across Örebro County. It was founded in 1843 as a weekly paper and became a daily in 1894. As of 2007, the newspaper has a circulation of 67,600 copies, making it the tenth largest in Sweden. •  Sclater's Lemur

  Sclater's Lemur (Eulemur flavifrons), also known as the Blue-eyed Black Lemur, is a species of true lemur. It can attain a body length of 39–45 cm, a tail length of 51–65 cm- a total length of 90–100 cm, and a weight of 1.8-1.9 kg. Being a primate, it has strong hands with palms like a human, which have a rubbery texture to give it a firm grip on branches. Its tail is longer than its body and non-prehensile. Like many of the species in the Eulemur genus, Sclater's Lemur is sexually dichromatic.

  The African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) is a species of wading bird of the ibis family, Threskiornithidae, which breeds in sub-Saharan Africa, southeastern Iraq, and formerly in Egypt, where it was venerated and often mummified as a symbol of the god Thoth. It has also been introduced into France, Italy, Spain, and the United States (S. Florida). The bird nests in tree colonies, often with other large wading birds such as herons.
