Summary

Joost van den Vondel (17 November 1587 – 5 February 1679) was a Dutch writer and playwright. He is considered the most prominent Dutch poet and playwright of the 17th century. His plays are the ones from that period that are still most frequently performed, and his epic Joannes de Boetgezant (1662), on the life of John the Baptist, has been called the greatest Dutch epic.   • Kaspar von Barth (June 21, 1587 – September 17, 1658) was a German philologist and writer. Barth was born at Küstrin in the Neumark region of Brandenburg. A precocious child, he was looked upon as a marvel of learning. After studying at Gotha, Eisenach, Wittenberg, and Jena, he travelled extensively, visiting most of the countries of Europe. Too independent to accept any regular post, he lived alternately at Halle and on his property at in Leipzig.

  • Arthur Johnston (c.1579–1641) was a Scottish poet and physician. He was born in Caskieben (later renamed Keithhall) near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. His father was an Aberdeenshire laird, and his mother Christian Forbes was the daughter of the seventh Lord Forbes. Johnston is thought to have begun his university studies at one, or both, of the colleges at Aberdeen, but around 1608 he went to Italy and received an M.D. at Padua in 1610.
  • Yun Seondo (1587–1671) was a noted Korean poet of the Joseon Dynasty. He was born in Seoul, in what is now South Korea. He achieved early success as a government official, but his straightforward character made enemies at court and he was banished for imprudent criticism of those in power. Thirteen years later he returned to become tutor to the royal princes but was later banished again.
  • Samuel Scheidt (baptized 3 November 1587 – 24 March 1654) was a German composer, organist and teacher of the early Baroque era. He was born in Halle, and after early studies there, he went to Amsterdam to study with Sweelinck, the distinguished Dutch composer, which was clearly formative on his style. On his return to Halle he became court organist, and later Kapellmeister, to the Margrave of Brandenburg.

  • Vorkuta Sovetskiy (also known as Vorkuta East) is a military airfield in the Komi Republic, Russia located 11 km east of Vorkuta. It contains one of the largest runways in Russia's Arctic region. Sovetskiy was built in the 1950s as a staging base for intercontinental strategic bomber strikes (as the so-called 'bounce' airdrome), and is maintained by OGA (Arctic Control Group).
