  Anahuac is an ancient name for a Mesoamerican, particularly Aztec, area or areas, usually identified as located within or even coterminous with the Valley of Mexico. It can also refer to the former lake basins around Mexico City, often including the Lerma and Pánuco river systems.

•  Iztaccíhuatl

  Iztaccíhuatl (alternative spellings include Ixtaccíhuatl, or either variant spelled without the accent), is the third highest mountain in Mexico, after the Pico de Orizaba (5,636 m) and Popocatépetl (5,426 m). Its name is Nahuatl for "white woman". The mountain has four peaks, the highest of which is 5,230 m (17,159 ft) above sea level. Together, the peaks are seen as depicting the head, chest, knees and feet of a sleeping female figure, which is visible from either the east or the west.

•  Popocatépetl

  Popocatépetl is an active volcano and, at 5,426 m (17,802 ft), the second highest peak in Mexico after the Pico de Orizaba (5,636 m/18,491 ft). Popocatépetl is linked to the Iztaccíhuatl volcano to the north by the high saddle known as the Paso de Cortés, and lies in the eastern half of the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt.

•  Isla Mujeres

  Isla Mujeres one of the nine municipalities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The municipality, located in the northeastern corner of the state is mostly on the mainland and has a municipal seat of the same name; Isla Mujeres. The municipal seat is a small island town a short distance off the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) northeast of Cancún. •  Cozumel

  Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, opposite the Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatan Channel. Cozumel is one of the nine municipalities of the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is a tourist destination for its scuba diving and snorkeling. •  Papaloapan River

  The Papaloapan River is one of the main rivers of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Its name is derived from the Nahuatl papalotl and apan. The Papaloapan rises in the Sierra Madre Oriental on the border between the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. Its course takes it 122 km in a northeasterly direction before draining into Alvarado lagoon. The cities of San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec (Oaxaca) and Tlacotalpan (Veracruz) are situated on the banks of the Papaloapan.

•  Maya Mountains

  The Maya Mountains are a mountain range in Belize and eastern Guatemala. The tallest mountain is Doyle's Delight at 3,688 ft (1,124 m. ) The Maya Mountains and associated foothills contain a number of important Mayan ruins including the sites of Lubaantun, Nim Li Punit, Cahal Pech and Chaa Creek; the most eminent nature reserve within the range is the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

  Lake Texcoco was a natural lake formation within the Valley of Mexico, a basin with an average elevation of 2,236 metres (7,336 ft) above mean sea level located in the southern highlands of Mexico's central altiplano. •  Isthmus of Tehuantepec

  The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is an isthmus in Mexico. It represents the shortest distance between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, and prior to the opening of the Panama Canal was a major shipping route known simply as the Tehuantepec Route. The name is taken from the town of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec in the state of Oaxaca, which in turn comes from the Nahuatl tecuani-tepec.

  The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (Eje Volcánico Transversal) also known locally as Sierra Nevada, is a volcanic belt that extends 900 km from west to east across central-southern Mexico. •  Wisent

  The wisent (Bison bonasus), also known as the European bison, is a species of Eurasian bison. It is the heaviest surviving land animal in Europe; a typical wisent is about 3 m (10 ft) long and 1.8 to 2.2 m (6 to 7 ft) tall, and weighs 300 to 920 kg (660 to 2,000 lb). It is typically lighter than the related American Bison (Bison bison), and has shorter hair on the neck, head and forequarters, but longer tail and horns. Wisent are now forest-dwelling.
