  The 1948 Arab–Israeli War, known by Israelis as the War of Independence or War of Liberation and by the Arabs as the Catastrophe, was the first in a series of wars fought between the newly declared State of Israel and its Arab neighbours in the long-running Arab-Israeli conflict. The war commenced upon the termination of the British Mandate of Palestine in mid-May 1948 following a previous phase of civil war in 1947–1948.

Benny Morris writes that, after the war, Israel contrasted its "purity of arms" with the alleged barbarity of the Arab armies, which had engaged in the mutilation of corpses of Jewish prisoners of war.   On October 28, 1948, the Arab town al-Dawayima (also spelt Dawaymeh) was conquered during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war by the 89th Commando Battalion which was composed of former Irgun and Lehi forces. They encountered only "light resistance" from the villagers, whose core clan, the Ahdibs, traced their origins to the Muslim conquest of Palestine in the seventh century. Dawayima was situated a few kilometres West of Hebron.

The symbol of the Barak Armor Brigade is a shield with a red border, blue and white Haifa coastline background and a sword on it. •  Al-Kabri massacre

  On May 20, 1948, the Israeli Carmeli Brigade captured al-Kabri, an Arab village in the north-west corner of the region of Palestine which became the State of Israel. The operational orders given that day were to "attack with the aim of conquest, the killing of adult males, [and] the destruction and torching of the villages of Kabri, Umm al Faraj and Al-Nahr. " The orders were carried out to the letter. Al-Kabri was captured without any resistance and it was almost immediately depopulated.
