He died as a martyr during the persecution by Emperor Valerian. According to the Liber Pontificalis, he was Greek by birth; however this is uncertain and disputed by modern western historians arguing that the authors of Liber Pontificalis confused him with that of the contemporary author Xystus who was Greek student of Pythagoreanism.

  • Pope Saint Victor I was a Pope from 189 to 199 (the Vatican cites 186 or 189 to 197 or 201). Pope Victor I was the first bishop of Rome born in the Roman Province of Africa.   • Novatian (circa 200 – 258) was a scholar and antipope who held the title between 251 and 258. He was a noted theologian and writer, the first Roman theologian who used the Latin language, at a time when there was much debate about how to deal with Christians who had lapsed and wished to return, and the issue of penance. Consecrated as pope by three bishops in 251, he adopted a more rigorous position than the established Pope, Cornelius.

  • Zhuge Dan (died 258) was a general of Cao Wei. He helped crush Wuqiu Jian's rebellion against Cao Wei in 255. He later rebelled against the Wei Kingdom for reasons similar to Wuqiu Jian's reasons for rebelling, because he thought that the Simas were planning to usurp the Wei Dynasty. He sent one of his sons as captives to Eastern Wu and received aid from Eastern Wu. However, his rebellion failed and he was killed.
