Overview

Summary

More information...

  • The Astures were the original Indo-European inhabitants of the northwest area of Hispania that now comprises almost the entire modern autonomous community of Asturias and the modern provinces León, and northern Zamora, and east of Trás os Montes in Portugal. Isidore of Seville gave an etymology as coming from a river Asturia, identified by David Magie with the Órbigo in the plain of León, by others the modern Esla; at a later date the name was retained in the medieval Kingdom of Asturias.

  • The Vaccaei were an ancient tribe who settled in the Meseta Central of northern Hispania. According to Diodorus Siculus, they were the most cultured group of the Celtiberians, and Silius Italicus classed them as merchants and businessmen. Their existence is proved at least from the third century BC. Polybius relates, although he wasn't an eyewitness, the capture of the Vaccean cities of Helmantica and Arbucala by Hannibal in 220 BCE.

  • The Bletonesii were one of the pre-Roman Celtic peoples of the Iberian Peninsula, dwelling around the city of Bletisa, or modern Ledesma in the province of Salamanca (Spain). They were punished by the Romans for practicing human sacrifice. If the placement in Bletisa is correct, they lived near the Vettones.

  • The Carpetani were one of the Celtic pre-Roman peoples of the Iberian Peninsula, akin to the Celtiberians, dwelling in the central part of the meseta - the high central upland plain of the Iberian peninsula. In 219 BC Hannibal defeated a combined force of Vaccaei, Olcades and Carpetani, thus completing his conquest of Hispania south of the Ebro with the exception of Saguntum.
  • The Arevaci were an ancient Celtiberian tribe who settled in the Meseta Central of northern Hispania. The Vaccaei were their allies. The Arevaci and the Belli revolted against Roman rule in the Celtiberian War.
  • The Albiones were a Pre-Roman Celtic tribe of the Iberian Peninsula, living on the north coast of modern Spain, in western Asturias, probably belonging to the Gallaeci and Astur group, and mentioned by Pliny.
  • The Ruccones (also called Rucones, Runcones, or Roccones) were a people group, probably related to the Astures, who lived semi-autonomously in Hispania in the fifth and sixth centuries.
