Possui 364 558 habitantes, e uma região metropolitana contando com 1.091.732 (um sétimo dos 7,2 milhões de habitantes da Confederação Helvética). É a capital do Cantão de Zurique. Faz parte da Suíça desde 1351. A origem do nome está provavelmente nas línguas celtas com a palavra Turus.
