Overview

Summary

FluidSynth, formerly known as iiwusynth, is a free open source program which synthesizes using SoundFont technology without need for a SoundFont-compatible soundcard, and the size of loaded SoundFont banks is limited by the amount of RAM available. There is a GUI for FluidSynth called Qsynth which is also open source. Both are available in most Linux distributions; It is also possible to compile them for Windows. More information...

    • Zinf is a free audio player released under the GNU General Public License. It runs on Unix-like operating systems and Windows. Zinf is a continuation of the FreeAmp project and uses the same source code.

    • Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is a file format for lossless audio data compression, primarily authored by Josh Coalson. FLAC reduces bandwidth and storage requirements without sacrificing the integrity of the audio source. A digital audio recording (such as a CD track) encoded to FLAC can be decompressed into an identical copy of the audio data. Audio sources encoded to FLAC are typically reduced to 50–60% of their original size.
    • Unix Amiga Delitracker Emulator (UADE) is a portable open source or free software program for playing Amiga music. UADE plays most Amiga sound formats using the Unix Amiga Emulator for Amiga emulation. A minimal clone of operating system and application APIs are implemented on top of the emulator in Motorola 68020 assembler. UADE is the only HW emulation based Amiga format player for UNIX systems. It supports more Amiga formats than any other player. UADE runs on UNIX platforms and Cygwin.
    • Csound is a computer programming language for dealing with sound, also known as a sound compiler or an audio programming language, or more precisely, a C-based audio DSL. It is called Csound because it is written in C, as opposed to some of its predecessors. Csound was originally written at MIT by Barry Vercoe, based on his earlier system called Music 11, which in its turn followed the MUSIC-N model initiated by Max Mathews at the Bell Labs. It is free software, available under the LGPL.
    • The Open Sound System (OSS) is an interface for making and capturing sound in Unix operating systems. It is based on standard Unix devices (i.e. POSIX read, write, ioctl, etc.). The term also refers sometimes to the software in a Unix kernel that provides the OSS interface; in that sense it can be thought of as a device driver or collection of device drivers for sound controller hardware.
    • LADSPA is an acronym for Linux Audio Developers Simple Plugin API. It is a standard for handling filters and effects, licensed under the GNU LGPL. It was originally designed for Linux through consensus on the Linux Audio Developers Mailing List, but works on a variety of other platforms. It is used in many free audio software projects and there is a wide range of LADSPA plugins available. LADSPA exists primarily as a header file written in the C programming language.
    • mpg123 is a fast, free and console MPEG audio player software program for UNIX and Linux operating systems. mpg123 was ported to the Windows platform using Cygwin and MinGW. It supports MPEG-1 and -2, layers 1, 2 and 3. Its most common use is to play MP3 files. It also comes as a Winamp plugin. mpg123 relied heavily on assembler optimizations to perform the iDCT part of the MPEG decoding quicker than any other MP3 player.

    • GNU LilyPond is a computer program for music engraving. One of LilyPond's major goals is to produce scores that are engraved with traditional layout rules, reflecting the era when scores were engraved by hand. LilyPond is cross-platform, and is available for several common operating systems; released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, LilyPond is free software.
