Summary

Catherine Hickson (born in 1955) is a Canadian volcanologist formerly part of the Geological Survey of Canada. Hickson has mapped and studied young volcanoes in Canada assessing their past and future eruptions. In 2003, Hickson was one of the three scientists to report on a hypothetical eruption at the Canadian volcano Mount Cayley. Hickson works in South America where some of the largest and highest volcanoes are, including those in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. More information...

    • Haroun Tazieff (Warszawa, 11 May 1914 — Paris, 2 February 1998) was a French volcanologist and geologist. He was a famous cinematographer of volcanic eruptions and lava flows, and the author of several books about volcanoes. Born in Warsaw, Russian Empire, his father was a Tatar doctor, and his mother a Polish chemist and doctor in political sciences. He lived in Brussels, Belgium, starting in 1917.
    • Katia Krafft (Mulhouse, 17 April 1942 – 3 June 1991) and her husband, Maurice Krafft (Guebwiller, 25 March 1946 – 3 June 1991) were French volcanologists who died in a pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen, in Japan, on June 3, 1991. Their obituary appeared in the Bulletin of Volcanology, (vol. 54, pp 613–614). Maurice and Katia were known for being pioneers in filming, photographing and recording volcanoes, often getting within feet of lava flows.
    • Giuseppe Mercalli (May 21, 1850 - March 19, 1914) was an Italian volcanologist.
    • Dr Jeffrey C. Wynn (aka Jeff Wynn), is a research geophysicist with the United_States_Geological_Survey. He has served most recently as the Team Chief Scientist for Volcano Hazards, USGS, and is based in the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, WA, one of the five USGS volcano observatories in the United States . In his professional career, Wynn has served as vice president for R&D of Zonge Engineering, and in several rotational management positions in the USGS.
    • Volcanologist Thomas Augustus Jaggar, Jr. (1871-1953) founded the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and directed it from 1912 to 1940.

    • George Julius Poulett Scrope FRS (10 March 1797 – 19 January 1876) was an English geologist and political economist as well as a magistrate for Stroud in Gloucestershire. He was the second son of J. Poulett Thompson of Waverley Abbey, Surrey. He was educated at Harrow, and for a short time at Pembroke College, Oxford, but in 1816 he entered St John's College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1821.

    • David Alexander Johnston (December 18, 1949 – May 18, 1980) was a volcanologist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) until he was killed by the 1980 eruption of the Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington. He was killed while manning an observation post about 6 miles (10 km) from the volcano on the morning of May 18, 1980.

    • Harry Glicken (1958 – 1991) was a volcanologist who was killed on 3 June 1991 by a pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen in Japan.
