  The Smithsonian Institution is an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines. •  Maid of the Mist

  The Maid of the Mist is a boat tour of Niagara Falls. (The actual boats used are each named Maid of the Mist, followed by a different Roman numeral in each case. ) The boat starts off at a calm part of the Niagara River, near the Rainbow Bridge, and takes its passengers past the American and Bridal Veil Falls, then into the dense mist of spray inside the curve of the Horseshoe Falls. The tour is available starting from either the Canadian or U.S.

•  Winter Quarters (North Omaha, Nebraska)

  Winter Quarters was an encampment formed by approximately 2,500 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as they waited during the winter of 1846-1847 for better conditions for their trek westward. It followed a preliminary tent settlement some 3½ miles west at Cutler's Park. The Mormons built more than 800 cabins at the Winter Quarters settlement. Located in present-day North Omaha overlooking the Missouri River, the settlement remained populated until 1848.

•  Whig Government 1846–1852

  Following the split in the Tory Party over the Corn Laws in 1846 and the consequent end of Sir Robert Peel's second government, the Whigs came to power under Lord John Russell. Sir Charles Wood became Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir George Grey Home Secretary and Lord Palmerston Foreign Secretary for the third time. One of the major problems facing the government was the Great Irish Famine (1845-1849), which Russell failed to deal with effectively.

•  New College, Edinburgh

  New College was opened in 1846 as a college of the Free Church of Scotland, later of the United Free Church of Scotland, and from the 1930s has been the home of the School of Divinity (formerly the Faculty of Divinity) of the University of Edinburgh.   Founded in 1846, the Hakluyt Society is a registered charity based in London, England which seeks to advance knowledge and education by the publication of scholarly editions of primary records of voyages, travels and other geographical material. •  Langley Aerodrome

  The Langley Aerodrome was a pioneering but unsuccessful manned powered flying machine designed at the close of the 19th century by Smithsonian Institution Secretary Samuel Langley.
