  • Pierre Belon (1517–1564) was a French naturalist. He is sometimes known as Pierre Belon du Mans, or, in Latin translations of his works, as Petrus Bellonius Cenomanus. Belon was born about 1517 at Soulletiere near Cérans-Foulletourte. He studied medicine at Paris, where he took the degree of doctor, and then became a pupil of the botanist Valerius Cordus (1515-1544) at Wittenberg, with whom he travelled in Germany.

  • Jacques Peletier du Mans (1517 – 1582) was a humanist, poet and mathematician of the French Renaissance. Born at Le Mans into a bourgeois family, he studied at the Collège de Navarre (in Paris) where his brother Jean was a professor of mathematics and philosophy. He subsequently studied law and medicine, frequented the literary circle around Marguerite of Navarre and from 1541-43 was secretary to René du Bellay.

  • Rembert Dodoens (Mechelen, 29 June 1517 – Leyden, 10 March 1585) was a Flemish physician and botanist, also known under his Latinized name Rembertus Dodonaeus. In 1530 he started his studies of medicine, cosmography and geography at the University of Leuven, where he graduated in 1535. He established himself as a physician in Mechelen in 1538. He married Kathelijne De Bruyn(e) in 1539. He had a short stay in Basel (1542-1546). He turned down a chair at the University of Leuven in 1557.
