  • The term Springhill mining disaster can refer to any of three separate Canadian mining disasters which occurred in 1891, 1956, and 1958 in different mines within the Springhill coal field, in close proximity to the town of Springhill in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia.   • The Pipeline Debate (May 8 to June 6, 1956) was a political event in the history of the Parliament of Canada. The debate surrounded the finances of the TransCanada pipeline, proper parliamentary procedure, and American economic influence on Canada. The controversy eventually contributed to the defeat of Louis St. Laurent at the polls in 1957, ending many years of Liberal rule, and bringing in a government under Prime Minister John Diefenbaker.

  • The 44th Grey Cup game was played on November 24, 1956 before 27,425 fans at Varsity Stadium inToronto. The favoured Edmonton Eskimos won their third straight Grey Cup over the Montreal Alouettes by the score of 50 to 27. Edmonton coach Pop Ivy surprised many by starting sophomore Canadian quarterback Don Getty. With Jackie Parker, Johnny Bright, Normie Kwong and Rollie Miles in the backfield, they were record setters.
  • The 8th Emmy Awards, later referred to as the 8th Primetime Emmy Awards, were held on March 17, 1956 to honor the best in television of the year.
