Overview

Summary

Presenilins are a family of related multi-pass transmembrane proteins that function as a part of the gamma-secretase protease complex. Vertebrates have two presenilin genes, called PSEN1 (located on chromosome 14 in humans) that encodes presenilin 1 (PS-1) and PSEN2 (on chromosome 1 in humans) that codes for presenilin 2 (PS-2). Both genes show conservation between species, with little difference between rat and human presenilins. The nematode worm C. More information...

    • Chymotrypsin is a digestive enzyme that can perform proteolysis. Chymotrypsin preferentially cleaves peptide amide bonds where the carboxyl side of amide bond (the S1 position) is a tyrosine, tryptophan, or phenylalanine. These amino acids contain an aromatic ring in their sidechain that fits into a 'hydrophobic pocket' (the P1 position) of the enzyme.

    • Chitinases are digestive enzymes that break down glycosidic bonds in chitin. Because chitin composes the cell walls of fungi and exoskeletal elements of some animals (including worms and arthropods), chitinases are generally found in organisms that either need to reshape their own chitin or to dissolve and digest the chitin of fungi or animals.

    • Chymosin or rennin is an aspartic acid protease enzyme found in rennet. It is produced by the cow, in the lining of the abomasum (the fourth, final, chamber of its stomach). Bovine chymosin is produced nowadays recombinantly in E. coli, Aspergillus niger var awamori, and K. lactis as alternative resource to the one from the cows. The gene is found in humans, but it is not in a functioning form.
    • Deiodinase (or iodide peroxidase) is a peroxidase enzyme. Types include: Iodothyronine deiodinase (contains selenium) Iodotyrosine deiodinase Thyroxine deiodinase

    • CD32 is a surface receptor protein and part of a large population of B cell co-receptors, which act to modulate signaling. It has a low-affinity for IgG antibodies and down-regulates antibody production in the presence of IgG. This feedback loops essentially lowers the production of IgG produced by B cells when there is a surplus in the body. Monoclonal antibodies can distinguish between type A and type B.
    • Angiotensin, a protein, causes blood vessels to constrict, and drives blood pressure up. It is part of the renin-angiotensin system, which is a major target for drugs that lower blood pressure. Angiotensin also stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone promotes sodium retention in the distal nephron, in the kidney, which also drives blood pressure up.

    • C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein found in the blood, the levels of which rise in response to inflammation. Its physiological role is to bind to phosphocholine expressed on the surface of dead or dying cells (and some types of bacteria) in order to activate the complement system via c1q. CRP is synthesized by the liver in response to factors released by fat cells. It is a member of the pentraxin family of proteins. It is not related to C-peptide or protein C.

    • Cyclooxygenase (COX) is an enzyme that is responsible for formation of important biological mediators called prostanoids, including prostaglandins, prostacyclin and thromboxane. Pharmacological inhibition of COX can provide relief from the symptoms of inflammation and pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, exert their effects through inhibition of COX.

    • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (also known as TSH or thyrotropin) is a peptide hormone synthesized and secreted by thyrotrope cells in the anterior pituitary gland, which regulates the endocrine function of the thyroid gland.
    • The signal recognition particle (SRP) is a ribonucleoprotein that recognizes and targets specific proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotes and the plasma membrane in prokaryotes.

    • The French Navy's Invincible was a sister ship to the Gloire, the world's first ocean-going ironclad battleship. It was launched on 4 April 1861. The Gloire class were designed by the French naval architect Dupuy de Lôme. Invincible was the second of the class to be completed. Invincible's original battery proved to be ineffective against armour, and was replaced in 1868 with breech loaders.
