Undervalued for over a century, possibly because she was a woman, she is now considered among the first league of Impressionist painters.   Emil Theodor Kocher (August 25, 1841 – July 27, 1917) was a Swiss physician, medical researcher, and Nobel laureate for his work in the physiology, pathology and surgery of the thyroid. Kocher was born in Berne, Switzerland. He studied in Zürich, Berlin, London and Vienna, and obtained his doctorate in Berne in 1865.   Prince Itō Hirobumi, GCB (伊藤 博文, Itō Hirobumi, 16 October 1841–26 October 1909, also called Hirofumi/Hakubun and Shunsuke in his youth) was a Samurai of Chōshū Domain, Japanese statesman, four time Prime Minister of Japan (the 1st, 5th, 7th and 10th), genrō and Resident-General of Korea. Itō was assassinated by An Jung-geun, a Korean nationalist who was against the Annexation of Korea by the Japanese Empire. Suematsu Kenchō was Itō’s son-in-law, having married his second daughter, Ikuko.

  Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen (29 July 1841 – 12 February 1912) was a Norwegian physician, remembered for his identification of the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae in 1873 as the causative agent of leprosy. Hansen was born in Bergen and studied medicine at the Royal Frederik's University, gaining his degree in 1866. He served a brief internship at the National Hospital in Christiania and as a doctor in Lofoten.
