  Ellsworth Bunker (May 11, 1894 - September 27, 1984) was an American diplomat, son of George Raymond Bunker. Trained as a lawyer, Bunker first worked in the private sector before becoming an academic. He then moved to government during the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration. In 1956 he was appointed United States Ambassador to India where he played a crucial role in the covert alliance between the two powers against China. Laird was a Republican congressman who also served as Richard Nixon's Secretary of Defense from 1969 to 1973. Laird urged Nixon to maintain a policy of withdrawing US soldiers from Vietnam.
