Summary

The Council of the West was a short-lived administrative body established by Henry VIII of England for the government of the western counties of England. It was analogous in form to the Council of the North. The Council was established in March 1539, with Lord Russell as its Lord President. Members included Thomas Derby, Sir Piers Edgcumbe, Sir Richard Pollard and John Rowe. More information...

    • The Crypt School is a grammar school for boys with a mixed Sixth Form, located in the city of Gloucester, England, founded in 1539 by John and Joan Cooke. The original school was part of St Mary de Crypt church in Southgate Street and the schoolroom can still be seen there. Later, in 1889, the school moved to Greyfriars, known better as Friar's Orchard, and in 1943, to its present site at Podsmead.

    • Shap Abbey was a monastic religious house of the Premonstratensian order on the western bank of the River Lowther in the civil parish of Shap Rural, around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the village of Shap, in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. The site is in the care of English Heritage and managed on its behalf by the Lake District National Park. The site is open to the public at all reasonable times and entry is free.

    • The Serbian Despotate was among the last Serbian states to be conquered by the Ottoman Empire. As the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 is generally considered as the end of the medieval Serbian state, Despotovina, the successor of the Serbian Empire and the state of prince Lazar survived for 70 more years, experiencing a cultural and political renaissance in the first half of the XV century before it was conquered by the Ottomans in 1459. Even then, it continued in Hungarian exile until the mid 1500's.

    • San Giorgio dei Greci ("Saint George of the Greeks") is a church in the sestiere or neighborhood of Castello, Venice. For centuries, despite the close ties of Venice to the Byzantine world, the Greek Orthodox rite was not permitted in Venice. In 1498, the Greek community gained the right to found the Scuola de San Nicolò dei Greci, a confraternity which aided members of that community.

    • Baddesley Preceptory was a preceptory of the Knights Hospitaller at North Baddesley in Hampshire, England. The preceptory was originally founded at Godsfield but was moved soon after the Black Death.
