Caroline Lucretia Herschel foi uma astrônoma inglesa. Nasceu em uma família de músicos alemães. Em 1772 ela se mudou para a Inglaterra para ficar com seu irmão, o astrônomo William Herschel. Depois de aprender astronomia sozinha e matemática com a ajuda de seu irmão, ela se tornou sua assistente. Mais tarde, em 1787, Herschel foi nomeada assistente do Astrônomo da Corte, tendo sido a primeira mulher a ocupar esse cargo. In 1774, on the recommendation of Christian Gottlob Heine, he became secretary to the famous Strasbourg scholar Richard François Brunck, and in 1811 became professor of ancient languages and eloquence at Breslau (chief librarian, 1816) where he died in 1822.
