  • Ship models or model ships are scale representations of ships. They can range in size from 1/6000 scale wargaming miniatures to large vessels capable of holding people. Ship modeling is a craft as old as shipbuilding itself, stretching back to ancient times when water transport was first developed.

  • A cardboard boat race, sometimes known as a boat regatta, is a common school-spirit competition for students of high school and college age. The earliest documented cardboard boat regatta was the result of a design problem created by Davis Pratt at Southern Illinois University in 1962. See documentation at http://www. grantmaclaren. com/cardboard for the original problem statement, the design class and one successful contender.

  • Model yachting is the pastime of building and racing model yachts. It has always been customary for ship-builders to make a miniature model of the vessel under construction, which is in every respect a copy of the original on a small scale, whether steamship or sailing ship. There are fine collections to be seen at both general interest museums such a the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and at many specialized maritime museums worldwide.

  • The popularity of the story of John F. Kennedy's PT-109 made it a very popular subject for ship model companies in the 1960s, and it is still popular even as newly manufactured kits in the 2000s. Though less famous than the USS Constitution, it is a much less complex boat to model than a sailing ship, or even compared to destroyers or battleships.

  • Task Force 72 is an international association of Radio controlled model boat builders, all building in the common scale (ratio) of 1:72 .

  • Southwold Model Yacht Regattas (SMYR) is model yacht racing club based in the town of Southwold, Suffolk, UK. SMYR was formed in 1894 and the Southwold Regatta has been held every year (except war years) since. The event is open to all, but radio-controlled boats are prohibited. There are various types of competitions testing both speed and accuracy with handicaps for more skilled sailors. Some of the boats entered are up to 80 years old and include replicas of the old Beach Yawls.

  • The Footy is a very small (usually) radio-control sailboat whose length is a mere 12 inches (30.5 cm). The hull can be made from a fiberglass mold or simply with thin sheets of plywood fitted together. Two servos are used, one to control the sail and one for the rudder.

  • Fast electric is a term used in the model boat community to refer to a model powerboat powered by a battery instead of a glowfuel-burning two-stroke engine. The international body "Naviga" defines racing classes for Fast Electrics outside the USA, these classes being broadly divided by drive system (and hence racing format) and number of cells used in the drive battery.
  • Wooden ship models or wooden model ships are scale representations of ships, constructed mainly of wood. This type of model has been built for over two thousand years.
