  • José Cândido da Silveira Avelar, (São Jorge, 1843 - Horta, December 3 de 1905), was an Azorean historian, author of the pioneered work about the history of the island of São Jorge. He was a writer of the council administration of Velas in 1881 which he had done political and intellectual movements, sustained a polemical strength with João Duarte de Sousa, another author from the same island and a political opponent about the historiography of the island.
  • João Duarte de Sousa, some refer to J. Duarte de Sousa, (Velas, October 23, 1862 – Angra do Heroísmo, May 29, 1909), was an Azorean politician and a historian. He was a pioneer on the island history of São Jorge. João Duarte de Sousa served as a writer in the Velas town hall, where he remained for 24 years (in 1886). For his elevation in Terceira with Maria Carlota Rebelo.
  • João Teixeira Soares de Sousa, an Azorean politician and an investigator of Azorean history, anthropology, and ethnography, was born on the island of São Jorge in the municipality of Velas and the parish of Manadas on 12 September 1827, and he died at Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island on 1 February 1875. In general, he is referred to as Dr. João Teixeira Soares.
  • Manuel de Andrade Fulano de Tal, an Azorean jurist. He was also a comarta of Velas. He was a publisher of the review known as Jorgense.
