  • Type X (XB) U-boats were a special type of German submarine. Although intended as long-range mine-layers, they were later used as long-range cargo transports, a task they shared with the Type IXD and Italian Romolo class submarines.

  • German submarine U-215 was a Type VIID mine-laying U-boat of the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. U-215 was one of six U-boats of its kind, equipped with special vertical tubes that launched mines. Her keel was laid down 15 November 1940 by Germaniawerft in Kiel. She was commissioned on 22 November 1941 with Kapitänleutnant Fritz Hoeckner in command.
  • Minelaying is the act of deploying explosive mines. Historically this has been carried out by ships, submarines and aircraft. Additionally, since World War I the term minelayer refers specifically to a naval ship used for deploying sea mines.

  • ORP Gryf was a large Polish Navy minelayer, sunk during the 1939 German invasion of Poland. She was one of two large Polish ships that were not evacuated to Great Britain during Operation Peking prior to the outbreak of the Polish Defensive War (Wicher was the other). She was sunk in Hel harbour on 3 September 1939 during the opening stage of World War II.

  • German submarine U-219 was a Type XB submarine of the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. The U-boat was laid down on 31 May 1941 at the Germaniawerft yard at Kiel, launched on 6 October 1942, and commissioned on 12 December 1942 under the command of Korvettenkapitän Walter Burghagen.
  • The Pohjanmaa class minelayer is a minelayer in use by the Finnish Navy. There is currently only one Pohjanmaa class vessel in service in the Finnish Navy. She is the flagship of the navy. The ship has an ice operating classification of ICE-1A so she can operate all year round. During a crisis the main task for Pohjanmaa is mine laying and acting as a command ship. She also acts as a school ship for the Naval Academy cadets. Part of their training includes an annual cruise abroad.

  • The Hämeenmaa class minelayers is a two vessel strong class of minelayers, used by the Finnish Navy. The ships have a steel hull and alloy superstructure. The class has an ice operating classification of ICE-1A and can operate around the year. The design included some first attempts on stealth technology in the Finnish Navy. During a crisis the main task for the Hämeenmaa class ships is minelaying, but the vessels can also act as escort, transport and depot ships.

  • The HNoMS Vale was a Vale class gunboat built for the Royal Norwegian Navy at Karljohansvern Naval Yard in 1874. She was one of a class of five gunboats - the other ships in the class was Brage, Nor, Uller and Vidar. Vale was, in addition to the heavy, muzzle-loading main gun, armed with a small 'Quick Fire' gun and an early automatic gun, similar to the Gatling gun. Later Vale and her sister ships was rebuilt as mine layers, and she served in this role when the Germans invaded in 1940.

She was one of a class of five gunboats - the other ships in the class was Vale, Nor, Uller and Vidar. Brage was, in addition to the heavy, muzzle-loading main gun, armed with a small 'Quick Fire' gun and an early automatic gun, similar to the Gatling gun.

  • The HNoMS Gor was a gunboat built for the Royal Norwegian Navy at Karljohansverns Verft Naval Yard in Horten in 1884. She was one of a class of two gunboats - the other ship in her class being Tyr. The Gor and Tyr can be seen as improved Vale-class gunboats.

  • HNoMS Tyr was a gunboat built for the Royal Norwegian Navy at Karljohansverns Verft Naval Yard in Horten. She was laid down in 1884 and launched in 1887 with build number 67. Tyr was one of a class of two gunboats - the other ship in her class being HNoMS Gor. Gor and Tyr can be seen as improved Vale class gunboats, of 290 tons instead of the 250 tons standard for that class. The main gun was a staggering 7.8m meters long, or about a quarter of the length of the whole vessel.
  • The minelayer HNoMS Olav Tryggvason was built for the Royal Norwegian Navy by the naval shipyard at Horten in the early 1930s and had build number 119. She was considered a well armed and balanced ship, with an engine plant consisting of both steam turbines and diesel engines. Olav Tryggvason was the first Norwegian warship equipped with a basic gun computer, allowing all four main guns to be fired at the same time at one target with some degree of accuracy.

  • The minelayer HNoMS Glommen was built for the Royal Norwegian Navy during World War I, as the lead ship of the two ship Glommen class of mine layers. Her sister ship was Laugen. A rather small vessel, she and her sister ship were kept in service until the German invasion in 1940. Glommen surrendered to the Germans on 14 April,1940, and was rebuilt as a floating anti-aircraft battery. She was scuttled at Kirkenes in 1944 by the retreating Germans.

  • The mine layer HNoMS Laugen was built for the Royal Norwegian Navy during World War I, as the lead ship of a two ship class. Her sister ship was Glommen. A rather small vessel, she and her sister ship were kept in service until the German invasion in 1940. Laugen surrendered to the Germans on 14 April 1940, and like her sister ship was rebuilt as a floating anti aircraft battery. She was returned to the Royal Norwegian Navy in 1945 and decommissioned in 1950.

  • HMS Abdiel (M39) was an Abdiel-class minelayer that served with the Royal Navy during World War II. She served with the Mediterranean Fleet (1941), Eastern Fleet (1942), Home Fleet (1942-43), and the Mediterranean Fleet (1943). Abdiel was sunk by mines in Taranto harbour in 1943. Although designed as a fast minelayer her speed and capacity made her suitable for employment as a fast transport.

  • German submarine U-217 was a Type VIID mine-laying U-boat of the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. Commissioned on 31 January 1942, U-217 served with 9. Unterseebootsflottille (U-Boat Flotilla) from 1 August 1942 until she was sunk. U-217 completed three patrols and sunk three ships totalling 10,651 gross register tons (GRT). U-217 was sunk on 5 June 1943 in the mid-Atlantic with all hands by depth charges dropped by Grumman TBF Avengers from the escort carrier Bogue (CVE-9).
  • USS Weehawken (CM-12) was originally SS Estrada Polma — a car ferry built in 1920 by William Cramp & Sons at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was acquired by the United States Navy on 15 June 1942; renamed Weehawken on 18 July 1942; converted to a minelayer by the Bethlehem Steel Co. at Hoboken, New Jersey; designated CM-12; and commissioned on 30 September 1942, Lt. Cmdr. Ralph E. Mills, USNR, in command.
  • Wonsan class minelayer is currently the only minelayer in the Republic of Korea Navy. The Republic of Korea Navy planned to commission three Wonsan class mine layers. However, due to budget problems, only one was commissioned.

  • The Pansio class minelayers is a three-strong class of mine warfare vessels used by the Finnish Navy, built between 1991 and 1992. The vessels can also be used for transport or to supply the naval forts. The vessels can carry a 100 ton load. The ships are referred to as "mine ferries" in the Finnish Navy.
  • HMS Ariadne was an Abdiel-class minelayer of the Royal Navy. She was built by Alexander Stephen and Sons of Glasgow, Scotland. She was laid down on 10 October 1941, launched on 5 April 1943 and commissioned on 12 February 1944. Her first duty was to lay mines off the coast of Norway. She was also one of the ships taking part in Operation Stonewall. She then left Home waters in January 1944 to join the United States Seventh Fleet in the Pacific Ocean theater of war.
  • German submarine U-214 was a Type VIID mine-laying U-boat of the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. Laid down on 5 October 1940 by Germaniawerft in Kiel, the boat was commissioned on 1 November 1941 with Kapitänleutnant Günther Reeder in command. She trained with the 5. Unterseebootsflottille (5th U-boat flotilla) from 1 November 1941 until 30 April 1942, and was then assigned to the 9. Unterseebootflottille from 1 May 1942 until her sinking on 26 July 1944.
  • The SS Königin Luise was a German steam ferry. She operated between Hamburg and Holland, before being taken over by the Kaiserliche Marine on the outbreak of the First World War. She was used as an auxiliary minelayer before being sunk on 5 August 1914.
