  • Mac OS X is a series of operating systems and graphical user interfaces developed, marketed, and sold by Apple Inc. Since 2002, Mac OS X has been included with all new Macintosh computer systems. It is the successor to Mac OS 9, the final release of the "classic" Mac OS, which had been Apple's primary operating system since 1984.

  • Darwin is an open source POSIX-compliant computer operating system released by Apple Inc. in 2000. It is composed of code developed by Apple, as well as code derived from NeXTSTEP, BSD, and other free software projects. Darwin forms the core set of components upon which Mac OS X, Apple TV, and iPhone OS are based. It is compatible with the Single UNIX Specification version 3 (SUSv3) and POSIX UNIX applications and utilities.

  • Mac OS X is the newest of Apple Inc. 's Mac OS line of operating systems. Although it is officially designated as simply "version 10" of the Mac OS, "version 9" had a completely different codebase, file system, design, and hardware support. Mac OS had been Apple's primary operating system since 1984, and the family was backward compatible, so Mac OS X supported an emulated version 9 until version 10.5.
  • Safari is a web browser developed by Apple. First released as a public beta on January 7, 2003 on the company's Mac OS X operating system, it became Apple's default browser beginning with Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther. " Safari is also the native browser for the iPhone OS. A version of Safari for the Microsoft Windows operating system, first released on June 11, 2007, supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. The current stable release of the browser is 4.0.5 for both Mac OS X and Windows.

  • Open Firmware, or OpenBoot in Sun Microsystems parlance, is a standard defining the interfaces of a computer firmware system, formerly endorsed by the IEEE. It originated at Sun, and has been used by Sun, Apple, IBM, and most other non-x86 PCI chipset vendors. Open Firmware allows the system to load platform-independent drivers directly from the PCI card, improving compatibility. Open Firmware may be accessed through its Forth language shell interface.
  • Bonjour, formerly Rendezvous, is Apple Inc. 's trade name for its implementation of Zeroconf, a service discovery protocol. Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System service records. The software is built into Apple's Mac OS X operating system from version 10.2 onward and can be installed onto computers using Microsoft Windows operating systems.

  • iChat (formerly iChat AV) is an instant messaging software application by Apple Inc. for their Mac OS X operating system. It has audio, video and screen-sharing capabilities as well as text messaging. iChat can serve as a client for AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MobileMe, ICQ and XMPP. It uses a XMPP-like protocol and Bonjour for user discovery and it also allows for LAN communication. iChat's AIM support is fully endorsed by AOL, and uses their official implementation of the AIM OSCAR protocol.

  • Mail (Mail. app or Apple Mail) is an e-mail program included with Apple Inc. 's Mac OS X operating system. Originally developed by NeXT as NeXTMail, a part of their NeXTSTEP operating system, it was adapted, following Apple's acquisition of NeXT, to become OS X's Mail application. Mail uses the SMTP, POP3, and IMAP protocols, and supports Yahoo! Mail, AOL Mail, Gmail, MobileMe and Exchange via IMAP. The iPhone OS features a mobile version of Apple Mail with added ActiveSync support.

  • Mac OS X version 10.2 “Jaguar” is the third major release of Mac OS X, Apple’s desktop and server operating system. It superseded Mac OS X v10.1 code name Puma and preceded Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther”. The operating system was initially available on 23 August 2002 either for single-computer installations, and in a "family pack", which allows five installations on separate computers in one household.

  • Labels in Mac OS are a kind of seven distinct, colored parameters of metadata that can be attributed to files, folders and disks in the operating system. The labels were introduced in System 7 and were kept until the release of Mac OS 9. Mac OS X versions 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2 lacked the attribute, which was reintroduced in Mac OS X version 10.3.

  • Chess is a chess game for Mac OS X, and its progenitor, OPENSTEP, featuring a high-quality graphical display and support for chess variants such as crazyhouse and suicide chess. Also included are different skins featuring metal, grass, marble and wood. It is bundled with the Mac OS X operating system and is also distributed as free and open source software on the Apple website. The Apple Chess front end is a Cocoa application whose drawing code is based on the glChess OpenGL chess client.

  • FileVault is a system that protects files on a Macintosh computer. It can be found in the Mac OS X v10.3 ("Panther") operating system and later. FileVault uses encrypted file systems that are mounted and unmounted when the user logs into or out of the system. The user's home directory is encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm with a key derived from the user's login password. A master password can be set as a precaution against a user losing his or her password.

  • HFS Plus or HFS+ is a file system developed by Apple Inc. to replace their Hierarchical File System (HFS) as the primary file system used in Macintosh computers (or other systems running Mac OS). It is also one of the formats used by the iPod digital music player. HFS Plus is also referred to as Mac OS Extended (or, erroneously, “HFS Extended”), where its predecessor, HFS, is also referred to as Mac OS Standard (or, erroneously, as “HFS Standard”).
  • QuickTime VR (also known as QTVR) is a type of image file format supported by Apple's QuickTime. It allows the creation and viewing of photographically captured panoramas and the exploration of objects through images taken at multiple viewing angles. It functions as a plugin for the standalone QuickTime Player, as well as working as a plugin for the QuickTime Web browser plugin. QuickTime VR will play on Windows computers as well as Apple Macintosh computers.

  • Installer is an application included in Mac OS X which extracts and installs files out of . pkg packages. It was created by NeXT, and is now maintained by Apple Inc. Its purpose is to help software developers create uniform software installers. Installer resides at /Applications/Utilities/Installer. app on Macintosh computers running Mac OS X versions prior to 10.5, and launches when a package or metapackage file is opened.
