The score for a thing is a number between 0.0 and 1.0 (inclusive). The closer it is to 0.0, the more the thing is hated; the closer to 1.0, the more it's liked. "Whatever" lies on 0.5.
We don't just average the votes, to avoid a thing with just one like vote be better rated than a thing with 99 like votes and 1 hate votes. We use a special formula that takes into consideration how many votes there are. The less votes the thing has, the closer its score is to 0.5.
